What is NCCP?

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is a world-renowned Coach education program which enhances quality coaching.  The NCCP is governed by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) which designs and implements standardized certification and professional development programs across Canada.

Canoe Kayak & NCCP

Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) and Canoe Kayak Ontario (CKO) Sprint provides NCCP certification, evaluation and development opportunities for members working with paddlers at every stage of development.

Where can I find NCCP Multi-sport courses?

NCCP multi-sport course are provided by the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO) and are hosted throughout the year, either in-person or online.  Please go to the link below to check out the the CAO's workshop calendar.  NOTE:  if is advised that you register for any CKO Sprint workshop prerequisites while in advance of the workshop to ensure you have the required certification to enroll in the workshop.

Interested in hosting a NCCP workshop, contact Ryan Blair ryan@ckosprint.ca for details.

Advanced Coaching Diploma

The Diploma consists of four core themes; Coaching Leadership, Coaching Effectiveness, Performance Planning, and Teaching and Competition Readiness.  Each theme requires coaches to complete a series of modules comprised of several three (3) hour units of in-classroom sessions, seminars, workshops or labs.  Coaches enrolled in the Diploma program will work with a designated master/mentor coach who will support them in their completion or program requirements.  Normally, the Diploma program takes two (2) to three (3) years to receive certification.  The program is completed through the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and all assignments are integrated with Canoe Kayak Ontario.  If you are interested in the Diploma program please contact CKO Sprint’s Technical Director, Ryan Blair ryan@ckosprint.ca.

Fast Track Coach Evaluation Requirements

If a coach feels they can fast track to evaluation for Competition Introduction and/or Competition Development they must complete all certification requirements listed above, as well as NCCP multisport module Coaching and Leading Effectively.

Note the coach is required to pay the full workshop and evaluation fee.

If a coach wishes to fast track to evaluation for the Advanced Coaching Diploma, they must first apply to CKC for endorsement and meet the minimum eligibility requirements:

  • Extensive experience (minimum 5 – 10 years) working with Train to Compete/Train to Win athletes who are competing at an international level in Canoe Kayak;
  • Completed similar certification as the Advanced Coaching Diploma from another country;
  • Has proven success coaching at the Train to Compete/Train to Win level

If the coach is approved by CKC, CKC must apply to the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario for certification.

Maintenance of Certification

CAC recognizes the value of having certified NCCP coaches engaged in ongoing professional development.  For NCCP coaches to maintain their certified status, they are required to obtain Professional Development (PD) points.  PD points can be earned through national and provincial sport organization conferences and workshops, eLearning modules, NCCP workshops, coach mentorship programs and active coaching.  In most cases coaches are already earning their required PD points – Maintenance of Certification status is simply the introduction of tracking these points and recognizing coaches for their efforts.  For more information contact CKO Sprint’s Technical Director, Ryan Blair ryan@ckosprint.ca.

Coach Developers

NCCP Coach Developers are directly responsible for the development of coaches and need to be experts in learning as well as experts in coaching.  They include:  Learning Facilitators (lead the coach workshops), Coach Evaluators (complete sport-specific evaluations required for certification) and Master Coach Developers (train and certify Learning Facilitators and Coach Evaluators).  If you are interested in becoming a Coach Developer please contact CKO Sprint’s Technical Director, Ryan Blair ryan@ckosprint.ca.
