I did not have a good first heat, but came back with a great race in the semi-finals in order to make the Finals. In the finals I placed 5th, qualifying Canada a boat at Tokyo 2020, so it was definitely memorable, especially since I had no idea what place I finished in, until getting back to the dock and hearing the good news from my coach! I was so nervous I felt like I was going to throw up. I remember asking Richard Dalton how he did at his first international race and if he medaled and of course he did. I am very competitive and wanted to do the same going into my c1 1000m final. I just remember thinking, just go out hard and do your best there is no pressure. 100m into the race I realized I was in a line of 3 people fighting for 1st place. Pushing through it I held my position till the very end where the polish dude passed me. I was so happy that I achieved my goal of medalling in my first international race. He helped me when I was younger and was an inspiration for me watching him rip it in the back of the C2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZK4ipsYJFw 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲: One of my favourite race memories was making the final for the first time in C2 at the 2009 Sherbrooke nationals. It was my first full year canoeing and I partnered with a kayaker from my club Brandon Lind. We trained a couple times during the summer and had a really good heat and ended up making the final. Not only was it fun to do, but it was the first time in my paddling career that I proved to myself that I could do achieve the goals I set out. Flash forward to 2018 nationals in Sherbrooke, and not only did being back at the course bring back those memories, but by chance there was a picture on the cover of Brandon and I on the folder given to all the clubs. This made it even sweeter to go back to Sherbrooke. Honestly I was nervous to race with someone with more experience then me so I was trying really hard not to screw up the steering and stay in stroke. I also never thought I would stand on a podium with my teammate, mentor, and role model of a different gender after racing in the same boat. Thanks Mark for the memory. They were behind at the start and I thought that was it, forgetting that 1000m is a long way. On the way to boat control after K2, we passed Jeremy and Evan on their cool down. They began to tell us they placed third, but they still had a good race. I told them I was proud of them no matter what. It just so happens that they actually won and would be racing for Canada at U23 Worlds! This was a very special moment for me because it meant that I would have my brother with me at my first international competition and we got to represent Canada together.
