Words I Live By: If you don’t fight the fights you may not win, how can you call yourself a champion? - Adam Fedosoff
Reasons I love paddling: being outdoors, working hard, and the paddling community
A goal that drives me: For 5 years I was aiming for the Tokyo Paralympics but it did not pan out for me. Along the way I faced a lot of challenges including a serious injury that took me out of the sport and had me stuck in bed for months. Having this narrow focus kept me motivated but at times it drove me away from what I enjoy most about paddling. Being on the other side of this goal I did not see through, I am redefining success for myself. I am currently trying to break 50 seconds in a 200m and I have started va’a as well!
Favourite race memory: I will never forget my first World Championships because coach Mari Ellery accompanied me. The two of us worked hard together so it was nice for her to be there where I got some pretty good results. Also racing K2 with Schmied at Missy regatta.
Favourite Instagram follow: @Bren_hucks (A Paralympic champion in snowboard, an educator, a model, a mother and a huge inspiration for me.)
What would you perform at a talent show? Karaoke
What is one thing on your bucket list? I would love to go to New York City!

Favourite canoe/kayak legend: Andreas Dittmer!
Current favourite instagram accounts: @smoothiethecat @cbcolympics @halfbakedharvest @wsl
Favourite Race Memory: I have so many great race memories it’s hard to choose. One of my favourite race feelings is hitting the perfect gear in C2 500. It’s that feeling when every stroke is where you want it, and it (almost) seems easy to go hard. I love 500s, and they’re best with a partner.
How is the BC training camp going? I’m loving it. I feel so lucky to be here and be on the water. Old Baldy Mountain makes a pretty great backdrop for paddling.

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲: The last race I did, which was the Finals for the K1 KL2 Women’s 200m at the World Championships in Szeged, Hungary. I did not have a good first heat, but came back with a great race in the semi-finals in order to make the Finals. In the finals I placed 5th, qualifying Canada a boat at Tokyo 2020, so it was definitely memorable, especially since I had no idea what place I finished in, until getting back to the dock and hearing the good news from my coach!

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝: One of my role models growing up was @gabrielcanoe ! He helped me when I was younger and was an inspiration for me watching him rip it in the back of the C2.
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲: One of my favourite race memories was making the final for the first time in C2 at the 2009 Sherbrooke nationals. It was my first full year canoeing and I partnered with a kayaker from my club Brandon Lind. We trained a couple times during the summer and had a really good heat and ended up making the final. Not only was it fun to do, but it was the first time in my paddling career that I proved to myself that I could do achieve the goals I set out. Flash forward to 2018 nationals in Sherbrooke, and not only did being back at the course bring back those memories, but by chance there was a picture on the cover of Brandon and I on the folder given to all the clubs. This made it even sweeter to go back to Sherbrooke.

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲: A memory that sticks out for me is racing mixed C2 with Mark Oldershaw last summer at the World Cup in Duisburg. Honestly I was nervous to race with someone with more experience then me so I was trying really hard not to screw up the steering and stay in stroke. I also never thought I would stand on a podium with my teammate, mentor, and role model of a different gender after racing in the same boat. Thanks Mark for the memory.

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲: At NTTs in 2015, I only got to see the start of my brother, Jeremy, and Evan Bezemer’s C2 race because I was racing (K2 with Maddy Schmidt) right after them. They were behind at the start and I thought that was it, forgetting that 1000m is a long way. On the way to boat control after K2, we passed Jeremy and Evan on their cool down. They began to tell us they placed third, but they still had a good race. I told them I was proud of them no matter what. It just so happens that they actually won and would be racing for Canada at U23 Worlds! This was a very special moment for me because it meant that I would have my brother with me at my first international competition and we got to represent Canada together.

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲:
Olympic Hopes 2015 in Bydgoszcz Poland, it was my first international race of my career. I was so nervous I felt like I was going to throw up. I remember asking Richard Dalton how he did at his first international race and if he medaled and of course he did. I am very competitive and wanted to do the same going into my c1 1000m final. I just remember thinking, just go out hard and do your best there is no pressure. 100m into the race I realized I was in a line of 3 people fighting for 1st place. Pushing through it I held my position till the very end where the polish dude passed me. I was so happy that I achieved my goal of medalling in my first international race.
