Exit Strategy

2/14/2020

Similar to goal setting, an exit strategy can serve as a helpful resource to transitioning athletes.

Some things to consider when deciding to transition from sport:
1. Weigh the pros and cons
  • Be confident in your decision before you make it public.
  • Read Evaluating Your Sport to help make your pros and cons list
2. Talk to your coach
  • Have a private discussion with your coach and/or CKO Sprint Technical Director, Ryan Blair, to determine next steps
3. Create a timeline
  • It is recommended to complete your last season of racing. This way you can enjoy one last summer as a high performance athlete, enjoy the time at your canoe club, and being with your teammates. It is important to leave on a positive note, rather than after a poor result at trials, for example.
4. Announce your retirement
  • This doesn't have to be a public announcement, but it is important to inform involved parties like your canoe club, your coach, CKO Sprint's Technical Director, Ryan Blair, and/or CKC to review how your retirement will effect your Team obligations under your Athlete Agreement.
  • Complete an athlete transition consultation with Ryan Blair to discuss how CKO Sprint can best support you in your transition.
  • Your coaches, teammates, supporters, and family may feel blindsided if you do not have a personal conversation to inform them of your plan to transition. These people have played a large role in supporting your athletic pursuit. Do not fear disappointing them; we all know that transitioning is a part of being and athlete. They will appreciate the conversation you have with them about your decision - and remember to acknowledge and thank them for everything they have done in your sport career.
